“When we focus on and invest in people's wellbeing, there are so many benefits for the individual, for our performance, and for the organisation.” - Rob Pisano
It was 1982 in Adelaide, and every afternoon at 4’ o’clock, a fresh-faced Rob Pisano would walk out the doors of General Motors Holden, clutching a bunch of cheques.
“We had a branch in the factory, so my role was to take care of the cheques,” says Rob.
“I'd go out the front and meet the man to collect the cheques, and then I’d make my way back to the factory.”
Unfortunately for Rob, 4’o’clock was also knock-off time, and the young ANZ branch worker would face a stampede of 2,000 tired, grimy mechanics leaving after a hard day on the tools.
“I got knocked over so many times, but the guys were great and picked me up and dusted me off,” laughs Rob.
Perhaps it was destiny that – 44 years later – Rob finds himself working as the bank’s manager of Wellbeing & Safety for Asia, Europe and America.

“Wellbeing is something that I’ve always thought was really important. You learn through your interactions with people about the impact of what we do, and if we do it right, how well people can be.”
There’s no doubt attitudes towards mental health, wellbeing and safety in the workplace have evolved in the four decades Rob has worked at ANZ.
“People are people, they care for each other. The change is that we're recognising and having more open discussions around mental wellbeing,” says Rob.
“When we focus on and invest in people's wellbeing, there are so many benefits for the individual, for our performance, and for the organisation.”
Based in Adelaide for 44 years, Rob has held an impressive 18 roles, in various areas including Branch Banking, International Trade, and Talent and Culture, has managed 50 people, and worked under seven CEO’s.
“I have been lucky that I undertake international roles from Adelaide. People just don't know how big we are and that opportunities are available on a global scale.”
In Adelaide, Rob is also well known for being a part of ANZ “jam sessions” … where employees get together every few months and play music in the lunchroom on a Friday night.
Rob is also keen to point out - he's not the oldest member of the band!
