As Australia moves toward a cheque-free future, there are alternative ways to bank available at ANZ.

Here’s what is happening

We’ve seen a significant decline in cheque book usage as customers choose faster and more secure payment alternatives. As the Government has released plans to phase out cheques from Australia’s payments system by 2030, we're making updates to the availability of cheque books.

When things will change

Personal accounts

From 16 June 2024, if you have never had a cheque book on your account, you can no longer order one.

From 3 May 2025, you will no longer be able to order cheque books on most new accounts, and existing accounts where no cheque books have previously been ordered.

From 1 July 2025, you will no longer be able to order cheque books on new accounts, or on existing accounts where no cheques have previously been ordered.

The Australian Government has released its Cheques Transition Plan which outlines the Government’s timeline for phasing out cheques as part of a broader strategy to modernise Australia’s payments system. Cheque usage in Australia has significantly declined as many people today prefer the speed and convenience of cards or digital payment options for their banking.
